Norament Steptread Installation
Norament Steptreads includes a one-piece nosing-tread-riser combination available in four widths. The transition area from the tread and riser is grooved on the back to allow for variances in covering steps of different heights and depths. The joining of the ends, by sliding the riser portion underneath the vertical nose overlap, results in a virtually invisible joint. The stair nosing is manufactured at an 80° angle, and should only be used on steps with an 80° - 90° angle.
Norament Steptreads should only be used indoors. Care should be taken not to use, within the same area, two or more different original tread widths, or batch colors, due to production variations.
Material Checklist
1. Check deliveries for accuracy with order.
2. Do not mix different batches of a color within the same area.
3. Nora flooring products, all adhesives, and accessories must be site conditioned at room temperature for two (2) days prior to installation. Temperature must be 68° F + 5° F during installation and curing time.
4. Store off ground in a weather-tight enclosure.
5. Do not stack pallets.

Concrete, Steel & Wood Stair Recommendations |
Preparation
1. Stairs should be dry, clean, smooth, level and structurally sound. They should be free of dust,
solvents, paint, wax, varnish, oil, grease, asphalt, curing compounds, old adhesives, and other extraneous materials
(All foreign material must be removed - ASTM-F-710-92).
2. The stairs must be level. If the concrete stair is uneven or out of level, then it should be properly leveled by an experienced
underlayment contractor, following the instructions of the leveling compound manufacturer. The leveling materials must be portland cement
based and should provide a minimum 3,500 PSI compressive strength (ASTM C-109) and sufficient bond to existing subfloor surface
(i.e. Ardex, Laticrete, Duralox, Mapei, Plaincrete 20, or equivalent). Do not use GYPSUM BASE leveling compounds.
3. A wood step should be prepared as follows:
a. All stairs should be prepared for smoothness by planing or sanding.
b. All nails should be punched down or removed.
c. Loose boards should be nailed down or removed and replaced.
d. All gaps and uneven places must be filled.
4. Stainless steel or galvanized stairs must be roughened up to ensure proper bond (40 grit sandpaper).
All other metal stairs must be free of rust. A special primer (i.e. Glidden Old Guard No. 224HS series) should be used to prevent rusting.
5. The front edge of the step must be straight and match the shape of the profile. Round or wavy edges prevent proper adhesion of
the steptread to the step edge. This area is subject to the most strain. Unprepared edges at this area can cause damage of the adhesion and the steptread.
6. Broken-off or non-right angle edges must be straightened with special compounds or repair angles.
7. At installation, the subfloor temperature should be 68° F + 5° F.

Material Layout
1. Installation of Nora Steptreads should begin with the bottom step. The riser part of the steptread is cut off to fit to the riser of the bottom step, trimmed even with the edge of the riser, and installed. The remaining part (stair nosing with tread) is used for the top step of the stairway (landing).
2. Depending on the flooring to be used on the landing, only the nosing (e.g. Norament) or the nosing with the tread is used. When the Norament tile is used as a connection flooring, the tread part of the steptread cannot be used, since the pastille height of the Norament tiles (0.3 mm/01" - 1.5 mm/ .06") differs from the pastille height of the steptread (0.5 mm/.02").
3. When Norament is joined to the nosing part of the steptread, differences in thickness are avoided by cutting off the nosing part from the tread part of the steptread.
|
4. Between the nosing and tread part, there is a gradual reduction of the material thickness. The thickness at the nosing is approximately 5.0 mm (.20"); the thickness at the tread is approximately 4.0 mm (.16").
5. For reasons of the overall visual appearance, the heights are selected in such a manner that the Norament base thickness should be butted to the stair nosing to match the height.
Dry Fitting & Cutting
1. Each stair must be measured lengthwise in three locations:
a. Across the nosing.
b. Where the stair and riser come together.
c. At the top of the riser.
2. Transfer these measurements to the back of the Norament steptread.
3. Because steps are different sizes, mark what steptread goes on what step.
4. For wide steps, two (2) or more steptreads, of original width and batch, are used next to each other. The steptreads are cut in appropriate angles and can therefore be butt-jointed.
5. We recommend staggered fitting (Ashlar Pattern) of the cuts from one step to the next.
6. Completely dry fit the steptreads before installing.

Contact Adhesive Installation |
Stir the Adhesive
1. Stir the adhesive as some settling may have occurred during storage and shipment.
2. Note that the adhesive gives off a vapor. Avoid prolonged breathing of the vapor.
3. The product is non-flammable, but should not be used in areas with open flames or hot glowing surfaces because of thermal decomposition, which produces corrosive acid fumes.
4. Provide adequate ventilation.
Adhering the Steptread
NOTE: Only approved contact adhesive can be used to adhere Norament Steptreads.
1. Apply the contact adhesive to the subfloor and the back of the steptread with a medium nap paint roller.
APPLY IN A UNIFORM EVEN COAT.
IMPORTANT!! The vertical stair nosing part of the steptread is not adhered.
EXCEPTION: For strongly undercut steps, it is necessary to adhere the front of the nosing. In this case, the inside of the nosing and the respective part of the riser have to be roughened with sandpaper.
2. The grooves at the transition from the tread to the riser must not be filled with adhesive. Use the paint roller to apply the adhesive in this area.
3. The applied adhesive should be allowed to dry 10 to 30 minutes (dry to touch). Drying time will depend on temperature and humidity. Drying time is to allow solvent gases to escape. If contact is made too soon, the gases can cause the material to bubble.
NOTE: Contact adhesive has instant adhesion. To prevent placing the steptread in the wrong location, do the following.
4. Cut a piece of wax paper the length of the stair.
5. Crease the wax paper at a 90° angle.
6. Place the wax paper on the riser and on the step. The wax paper will not stick to the adhesive.
7. Holding the back of the top tread up, fit the nosing of the material tight to the nosing of the stair.
8. Tap into place with a rubber mallet.
9. Rub the remainder of the steptread into the adhesive not covered with the wax paper.
10. Remove the wax paper, holding the back of the steptread up.
11. Before placing the riser portion into the adhesive, use a pressure roller or stair tool to press the material firmly against the stair and riser.
12. Place the riser portion into the adhesive.
13. Roll the entire steptread with a seam roller.
14. Cut the extending part of the riser off even with the step.
15. Excess adhesive can be cleaned off using Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl).
CAUTION: The 2.0 meter (78.74") steptread, in particular, must not be bent or folded during fitting so the vertical nosing will not be overstretched and become wavy. This means that two (2) installers are required for installing the tread.
Final Application Follow Up
1. Check the adhesive bond over all surfaces.
2. Protect the installed steptreads after installation from sun and moisture for 1-2 days.

NOTE: Adhesive will dry faster on rubber accessories than on vinyl accessories.
Sanitary Base, Inside & Outside Corners
Preparation
1. Use only on structurally sound surfaces such as plaster, drywall, plywood, panelling, masonry, etc.
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dust, dirt, wax, grease, loose paint or plaster, old adhesive, etc. Plaster and cement must
be thoroughly seasoned. Surface should be free of abnormal irregularities. The gap between the wall and subfloor should be no more
than 1/4". Do not apply over nonporous surfaces or epoxy paint. Trim vinyl wallcoverings so that no more than 1/4" is covered by
the base.
2. Cove base adhesives are not acceptable when installing Nora Sanitary Base.
Installation
1. Use only the recommended Nora Contact Adhesive.
2. With a paint brush, apply the adhesive to the back of the inside & outside corners and on the wall and subfloor.
3. The applied adhesive should be allowed to dry to 10 to 20 minutes (dry to touch). Drying time will depend on temperature and humidity. Drying time is to allow solvent gases to escape. If contact is made too soon, the gases will cause the material to bubble.
4. Place the corners into position and roll with a hand roller.
5. Snap a chalk line on the wall and subfloor. These lines will aid in proper placement of the sanitary base and serve as an adhesive line.
6. Pre-cut the length of base needed approximately one (1) inch longer.
7. Apply the contact adhesive to the wall, subfloor and back of the base.
NOTE: The grooves on the back of the base, at the transition from the subfloor to the wall, MUST NOT be filled with adhesive.
A small paint roller with a medium nap roller works well to apply the adhesive.
THE BEST RESULTS ARE ACHIEVED WHEN THE BASE IS PLACED INTO POSITION WITH TWO (2) INSTALLERS.
8. Installer #1 will bend the base (at the toe) at a 90° angle. Installer #2 will overlap the corner about a 1/2" at the same
time placing the toe of the base on the chalk line on the floor, installing 3 to 4 foot sections at a time.
9. Use a pressure roller or stair tool to fit the base TIGHT to the wall and floor area.
10. Rub the back of the base into position on the wall with your hand.
11. Continue installing in this manner until the length of base cut is installed.
12. Use an underscriber to fit the base to the corners.
13. Roll the entire section of base with a seam roller to ensure proper bond.
14. Excess adhesive should be cleaned off the surface of the base with Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl).
15. Check the adhesive bond over all surfaces.
Top Set Cove Base Instructions
1. See surface preparation for Sanitary Base.
2. The base should lie flat for 24 hours prior to installing.
3. Apply the Cove Base Adhesive to the back of the base with a 3/32" x 3/32" x 3/32" notch trowel.
4. Use a larger notch trowel for irregular or rough surfaces.
5. Leave a 1/4" space at the top of the base when applying the adhesive.
NOTE: Cove Base Guns & Nozzles can also be used.
6. Apply the base to the wall and press into place with your hand and roll with a seam roller to ensure proper adhesion and adhesive
transfer.
NOTE: The base should not be stretched during installation. Make certain the ends of the base are butted tightly together and
the base fits tightly against the wall. Irregular or curved surfaces may require bracing until the adhesive sets. Excess adhesive
should be removed using a prescribed adhesive remover.
